List your "real" club here
« on: September 07, 2007, 06:21:40 AM »
I've decided to unlock this topic so you could list your club right on this thread. No discussions here, just club info, okay?

There seems to be a zillion harmonica clubs out there, and though listed here and there, I've found a lot of them to be fragmented, defunct, dying, impossible to contact or in various states of disorganization. If you have a club that is in fact "healthy and functioning," shoot us the info and we'll list it on our "Clubs" page.  If you're putting a club together or rebuilding one and are looking for membership, send us that info and we'll post that on a Club Development" page.

I moved these from the feedback page:

Twin Cities Harmonica Society
(Minneapolis/St.Paul and surrounding area)
Contact: Steve Watne through Slidemeister
Meet weekly Monday evenings September through May at the Edina Public Library 7:00PM to 9:00PM
Our club is fairly active.  The meetings usually have 10 - 15 members show up.  The roster I believe is 40 or so.

If you can somehow allow those of us with music to sell to incorporate our Snocap music stores, that would be great.
http://www.snocap.com/
To do so would require the artist to post a scrap of HTML.  Pretty simple.  Payment would go directly to the artist.

The Steel Valley Harmonica Club and their yearly Corn Roasts are now just memories.
Don Blair who was their secretary since Alexander the Great was only mediocre told me that they officially ended their incorporation last year. Don says the club still has about $1000 that they plan on donating to SPAH someday.

A few of the former members, Don Blair, Bill Haydu, Dallas, Chuck Heaston (Bass) and their chord player 97 year old Ford O'Conner still get together occasionally to play.

The only club I have ever attended is a HOOT harmonica club in Tom Ball, a Houston suburb. However, my intent is to try to start one 50 or so miles from the Tom Ball club on the other side of Houston. So, what this is all about is asking for ideas on the ways other harmonica clubs have been started and what they have done that has worked to keep them going.

This is probably the wrong place to post a request for ideas about this, but what the heck

SHARPS - A safe and fun place to play your harmonica since 1991. Meeting every 1st & 3rd Thursdays at THe Helena United Methodist Church. The Church is located at 2035 Highway 58, Helena, AL 35080 (about 20 miles south of Birmingham).  Most of us are not Methodists but we truly appreciate these generous people! They have made their facility available freely for almost 20 years.

We know of about 50 harmonica players in this area who  have attended at least a few times but at a regular meeting we expect close to a dozen. We will be happy to do a 12 bar blues set occasionally but only by request. Most play a variety of chromatics, chordets, chords, bass and diatonics.

Addison Hitchcock is the Director - (205) 663-3434  -  Mail to SHARPS, PO Box 1991, Alabaster, AL 35007.

I know this is not supposed to be about discussion, but can't you meet in one of the member's homes (perhaps taking turns), until you can find an alternative site? Some Churches or even a school with evening classes might allow you to use their space?

Further developments....
We are meeting at Orchard Hill Reformed Church (1465 3 Mile Rd NW, Walker, Mich.) ... same date and time (7 p.m., 4th Tuesday).
Got that settled in time for our meeting on the 22nd, although the 3/4 mile walk from Alpine and 3 Mile was more rugged than I wanted it to be.

Asheboro Harmonica Club
Held in The Moring Arts Center
123 Sunset Avenue
Asheboro, NC 27203

Meeting on the first Thursday of each month (unless it's a holiday) at 7 p.m. Enter at the rear (behind the main branch of CommunityOne Bank). All skill levels (including absolute beginners and Maestros) are welcome. Call (336) 879-1171 (Crazy Bob) or send an e-mail to robertpcoble@hotmail.com for more information. There are usually 5-7 harmonica players (with one genuine CHROMATIC-only player [Hey! I'm not THAT crazy! ;)]) and occasionally a bass harmonica player [who IS "Crazy"]) with keyboard and occasionally electric bass and/or accordion accompaniment. It's totally informal, more like a jam session with members calling songs and everybody playing as best as they can. Sometimes the "Crazy" one discusses some musical theory, playing tips and proper etiquette for playing nicely with others. Everybody usually just has a great time playing and learning without pressure. Occasionally we have an audience, who didn't get the "word" that the bluegrass/OTM/country group does NOT play on the first Thursday night but DO play on all of the other Thursday nights (and harmonica players are welcome to play in it). There is also a member who is "Crazy" enough to repair and tune harmonicas if asked.

Sorry, but the site is only in Italian, but you can see some videos  :)
Our president and co-founder is my teacher Santo Albertini, a very good harmonicist (in my opinion  :)).

I started a Harmonica-club myself in Coventry, Midlands, in the UK.
It's still very much at the Early beginning stages, so far we have about 10 members, and 6 to 7 show up at any of our meetings every fortnight. We are up and running, but I'm Hoping there is more to come yet... the intentions and plans are quite Ambitious, or so I'm told. But if I don't try, I won't get anywhere, and my club is "as Real as it can be", so here I go, Please feel free to have a look:
www.coventry-harmonica.co.uk

 8)
Things don't always go in the way You Hope, or expect... My club was turning into a diatonic blues- "thing"... The Website has had a bit of an Overhaul, and is now Much more Specific in what we are looking for: We're looking for Chromatic Players Only, started a New group on Facebook, called "Harmonica Orchestra Coventry", the hint is in the name:  More about Playing from written arrangements, playing in Harmony, in short, if I can say this, "Playing Proper Music on Chromatic". We're Hoping to set up an Ensemble with about 10 players, just so that we can play music "with a bit of Body" so to speak, or "with a bit of Significance"... not sure if that makes sense, but You get the idea, right?  Feel free to have a look on the Website, and Join the Facebook Group?? It's Mainly aimed at New Beginner-players, but Experience and Knowledge is MORE than Welcome.
