Question about the slide
« on: July 06, 2012, 10:28:51 PM »
This may seem like a silly question, but it's a real problem for me.  When playing the lowest notes on my chromatic harmonica my mustache sometimes gets caught in the slide.  It's pretty painful.  I would lose the mustache except that it covers a significant scar and my wife hates it if I trim it short.  Any ideas?  Am I just holding or playing the harp wrong?

Ah, the bane of mustache wearers! Painful, isn't it? The only solution I've come up with is to cut it shorter, or grow it longer. If it's long enough, it will slide by the harmonica's holes; short enough and it won't reach. In between is the problem. I can still get caught on a CX 12, but not as often. The slide is set further back. Try playing a little deeper in your mouth, so your 'stache is more forward and out of the way.

Good luck!

Tom
Famous I don't know about. It's hard to be famous and alive. I just want to play music every day and hear someone say, 'Thanks, that was great, here's some money, same time tomorrow, okay?' -- Terry Pratchett, Soul Music

you might also try keeping the harmonica and moustache "parallel" to each other, not tilting the chrom or your face as you play.  that worked for me when I had a moustache.  but it is a bother and does make playing more difficult.

Try playing a little deeper in your mouth

This is a good solution if you donīt  shorten your moustache.

Or grow your self an Errol Flynn, and when you aren't playing your Chromatic, you can swash some  buckles, or vice-versa

the life of a chord player  - having a moustache or beard, playing on a given chord for a few beats and feeling a hair(s) getting caught in the chord cover, and knowing that your next chord is two feet away!

ANTICIPATION!

The voices in my head may not be real, but they have lots of GREAT ideas!

Take a look at Toots Theilesman on YouTube. His stash is pretty substantial and it appears to be OK. He "tilts" some.

If you watch him, you'll notice that he uses an "exaggerated pucker" as opposed to a relaxed pucker.  (waay out there as in "Oooooooo")

Thanks for the advice.  I guess I'll it grow for a while as shorter isn't an option.  No swashing buckles for me!  I'll take a look at Toots as well.
