irish tuning question
« on: June 17, 2012, 05:08:36 PM »
playing alto sax ,off and on, (mostly off) most of my life i have found playing in concert keys of (e), (a), and (b) a pain in the tail.  i hate reading sheet music with four, five, or six flats.

some of you might not know the alto is an Eb horn.

so instead of  having to think (okay Ab is G# or Gb is F#) does anyone think that an irish tuned Chromatic would be the way to go for flat keys?  i know this should be 2nd nature....it's not.

thanks,
clyde

i think this may be one place where chromatic harp players have it over symphonic instrument types......if a chomatic player wants to play in the key of g-flat, we just hold the button in all the time.  key of d-flat ends up being like playing in f except exactly backwards, only let the button out for g., e-flat, same except let the button out for g and d.  or sumpin like that, given that you've got a c harp.

at least, that's what i was taught.

The voices in my head may not be real, but they have lots of GREAT ideas!
