Links to tabs on Slidemeister?
« on: June 12, 2012, 06:11:43 AM »
Forgive me if this has been asked and answered here, but search wasn't helping:

Is there a list of the tabs on Slidemeister with links to the pages with the tabs?  The reason I ask is that sometimes the search function doesn't help, as in the case of a song like "If" (the search engine doesn't like very short words).

My list of Slidemeister tabs is a very useful reference for me and lots of other chromatic players.

Thanks

It would be useful if you could link from the A-Z to the tab.
A member did say it was possible, but if they did it, they would have to enter ALL future  tabs.
This is no good as it must be accessible to others.
If I was the only one who could do it, and I died, or ran away with a lap dancer (second option preferred ;)),
no one else could add to the A-Z in the future, with a link.
I am a computer numpty, but if anyone knows a way it would be great!

OK, I'm working on making a pdf file of the tabs list with links to each tab.  With my schedule, I'll only be able to do about 1 page a day, and the whole list is 8 pages long, so it'll take a little over a week.

Once it's done, it will be absolutely easy to update with any new tabs.  It would be my honor to do it.  I would like to be able to contribute some small thing to Slidemeister, which has been an absolutely essential resource for me.

Henry, I'll send the completed list to you for review and you can decide if you want to post it in the forum.

I would think searching the PDF master file might yield better results because they're in alphabetical order, no?.
The greatest satisfaction, is laying a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at you.

Yes, but the PDF master file doesn't have any links (as far as I can tell).  It appears to be a list of the songs, but the only way to find them is either to a) browse through the entire "CHROMATIC TABS" section of the forum or b) search using the search function of the forum.

The problem is that the search function doesn't like words with less than 3 characters, so it's impossible to find a song like "If" that way.  Also, even when you are able to find the song title via the search function, the link almost always takes you to the bottom of the discussion about those tabs.   I have a similar problem with my (non-chromatic harmonica-related blog).

What I'm making is a copy of the master PDF file, except if you click on any song it takes you directly to the page with those tabs on it.

Another problem with the search function is that it's not very forgiving of mispellings, unlike Google.  So I couldn't understand why I wasn't finding "Every Time We Say Goodbye" until I figured out that the song is spelled "Ev'ry Time we Say Goodbye".  So, on the PDF master file, the song is listed as "Every Time we Say Goodbye" but if you search for that you'll get nothing.

Once we have a master PDF file with links, every time you revise it, there's only a 30 second procedure to add the new link (which I will be happy to do).

It is taking me longer than the 1 page per day that I thought, though, because I've been so busy with the end of the school year.  I'm now 4 pages into the 8 page master list, so it'll be ready next week.

No rush Waxmeister!

It is important that I, and others, can add the links for continuity, as new tabs are created.

Of course.  That's really simple.   I'm not sure what program is used to create the PDF file that is the current list, but any time a new tab is added, a link can be added directly.  I use Open Office which is a free office suite with word processor, etc, but any word processing program or Acrobat could be used.  And no html programming is required.

Tell me how you or Mr Fedor or others make the list and I'll make up some detailed instructions.  It's really easy.  The only time consuming part is creating the initial set of links for all the tabs that are currently on the list (and it's getting to be a pretty impressive, big list!).  Once that is done, it's a breeze.

When I'm done, I'll send you a PDF file that is the latest list as published by Mr Fedor , except each song title is a link to the forum page.   It'll look exactly like the current list, but with the additional functionality.

It's too hot here in Chicago to do much but sit inside with my chrom and learn new songs, so I should make some progress today.  School's out and I don't start teaching classes again until next week.

I have a Mac, as does Age.
I just type the list using 'TextEdit' and then covert to a PDF file.
That's all really.
I am not very good with computers, so the simpler the better please! :o
I will be updating the A-Z.

Thanks again Waxmeister! ;)
