Songs from the last 25 years
« on: June 03, 2012, 03:21:58 AM »
This stems from another thread ' why isn't the chromatic..........', and the discussion that developed, some seem to think not enough 'modern' songs are performed, some seem to think there are no decent modern songs, so here we go , a place to post songs from the past 25 years , that may be suitable for the Chromatic.
Here is one to start the ball rolling ( or not ), a Scots lass singing about New York, written by John ( seen on guitar ) another Scot.

Here's another excellent melody that just barely makes it into this category since it's from 1987

I give you: Michael Jackson, I just can't stop loving you

Another lass , from my home county this time , getting her big break on TV , but in front of millions, stuck to ' her way'. Her own song. Gary may appreciate this.

Back to Ireland for one of the greatest of songwriters Jimmy McCarthy, hard to pick ONE as an example, for folks who think no great songs have been written in the last quarter century, check out this man alone, this is the song that made me take notice. I've chosen a clip that shows the lyrics .

Note the use of the "original kaa-zoo".

mary black's no frontiers is indeed a lovely song. i like it very much.  good performance too!

and its a perfect example about what i've been saying about current pop music.  most of it is nearly spoken.   a bunch of phrases of consecutive identical notes.   try to play that song in an arrangement lasting 2:30 to 3:00 and see if it is as interesting as an instrumental as it is as a vocal, even with a key change or two.   i'm betting it will get pretty boring for both listener and player.

no attack on anyone's taste here.  just an opinion on melodic content.

The voices in my head may not be real, but they have lots of GREAT ideas!

We are thinking of coming up to Knock tomorrow or the next day.  We know you live somewhere north of us - anywhere near Knock?

Computer was knocked out Roman, for most of the day, just came on again, we are actually as near to Galway as Knock, but if you are coming to Knock, you will pass quite near us, just give a buzz on the 'phone, will direct you.
