Ear players

Ear players = ?
A.J.Fedor:
Ear players:
Musicians who, regardless of music reading ability, can and thoroughly enjoy playing anything they hear without practice or the aid of musical score or tabulature.

My wife Ann and I went to the KC Harmonica Club meeting tonight. She diligently reads the notes as she plays the melodica, and I have my eyes closed playing along on my harmonica.
If I don't know the song, I'll make mistakes, but surprisingly even not knowing the song I'll anticipate and just know where to find the note.
That said, we were all playing diatonics, except LJ Atkison, who plays the chromatic.
I'm certainly NOT flawless when I'm playing along on my chromatic and suddenly need to use the slide....but I am getting better.

I don't think that playing by ear is usually accomplished "without practice" - that is, playing it perfectly the first time. Unless we are classical music players, we probably all play by ear time and again- that is to say, without the aid of printed music - but I doubt that any of us does it without practice, no?
