Newbie shopping for first Chromatic

I find the standard C Chromatic the least usefull of any. From the type of music you indicate, a 12 hole Chromatic in G would be my choice. Certainly the 14 hole that others have recommended would be another good option buit you will probably never use the top 2 holes. I too like the lower notes and often play on D Chromatics if not a G. As to make, you get what you pay for but the CX12 is the easiest to maintain if you can cope with the big mouthpiece. It is also the loudest. Avoid anything with a wooden comb, I have thrown all mine out!

I'll second the comment about avoiding wood combs.  The Suzuki scx56 is a nice chrome.  I had one for a while, but sold it.  It was a bit too big to carry everywhere in my pocket.  my first chrome was a cx12.  They a easy to open up for maintenance, and that's a good thing.  In my experience, the CX 12 needs more wind saver maintenance than any other model.  I rarely play mine anymore.

I have settled on a Seydel Deluxe.  It is easily pocketable.  I carry mine everywhere.  I ordered a custom tuned one starting on G below middle C in the diminished or "dimi" tuning.  It's a nice thing about Seydel.  They will custom build a chrome for you for a reasonable price.

You might consider a Seydel Deluxe in "orchestra" tuning.  This is a C solo tuned instrument that is the equivalent of holes 3-14 of a 16 hole chrome.

All together I prolly have about a dozen working wooden combed Chromatics that sound great, but I agree; stay the heck away from them!! ;)  Of course there are also folks on this very forum that would rather grit their teeth and die, than part with their "timber' harumkas, and so far none of us have killed each other!  :o See how nice we get along? 8)

That's because we live so far apart.  2 3 4 (laugh sign flashes on)
Actually, I wish we were all within driving distance.
