Why the holes in the coverplates of the Silver concerto?
gtfossum:
Does anyone have any idea about why the Hohner Silver Concerto has holes in the cover plates on the left hand side of the harmonica? Most people will cover the holes with their left hand anyway so it can not be much sound coming out of the harmonica that way anyway and the opening at the end should be more than enough to let the sound out.
kc_liaw:
our experimentation proof that low notes sound is much more rich and thick.. and it is not good to trap into that small chamber..
hence some holes have been drilled to increase the chamber area and make the sound much promising..

gtfossum:
But why is it only the Silver Concerto and the like that have holes? If it is such a good idea, it should show up also in the more expensive "standard" harmonicas?
A.J.Fedor:
I have no idea, but:
I'm always amazed how folks like us like to major on the minors. 8) We get almost militant in our defense (or condemnation) of full plates or tabbed plates, short throw or long throw, straight tuned or cross-tuned, wood comb or acrylic comb, ramps or no ramps, embossed slots or non embossed slots, screws or nails, magnets or no magnets, weights or no weights and now holes or no holes and I'm sure the list will go on as new choices come up.
Wanna know what I think? Of course ya don't, but I'm gunna tell ya anyway. 8) None of this stuff matters a hill of beans to players who don't walk on water, (FTR, none of us here do) and many times the guys that do, are oblivious to the stuff us peons think make the world go 'round! We're always looking for that magic something that's gunna make us sound professional like Toots, Stevie or Larry or whoever. Well nothin's gunna make us play as well as those guys except a lot of practice and confidence in our own potential; and even then, in all reality, it still probably won't happen. :'( In the end, if we ever managed to find ourselves on a par with one of the greats we will have to admit to ourselves that it wasn't the tricks; it was the dedication.
One of my favorite stories: The late Paul "Doc" VanDersijde told me about the time he met Toots at a convention. They were sitting at a table and Paul asked to see the Great ones axe. Toots complied and handed Doc his MellowTone with a grin. Doc, expecting some super "tricked out" custom, diamond studded, fifteen thousand dollar Chromatic was mortified.
He said: "Seriously Age! It looked like an old, beat up 270! and I thought to myself: Whatta piece o'%@#&!!"
It ain't the axe kids; its the AxeMeister! ;D

"…don't walk on water, (FTR, none of us here do)…"
I do. But only when the pond freezes solid <ducks>
I like kc's explanation. There are many paths to enlightenment. Gotta try it to hear the effects, huh?
Brendan Power used to drill holes in CX 12 cases, then line them with Chrometta covers. To what purpose?
Actually, I have to agree with you, Age. It's the player. But I wouldn't dismiss every modification as novelty.
