To make my little punch, I felt that I "cheated" by using my little bench-top milling machine which is available to few harmonica technicians.

Wally, did you "cheat" even more by using a lathe?  Is the tip of your punch hardened tool steel?

I found that the steel of which my screw was made wasn't hard/strong enough and the tip of the punch mushroomed and bent with repeated use.  I case-hardened the tip in the flame of a propane torch (using a carbon paste and a SS foil envelope) and it is now much more robust.

It will take as much machine work to adapt a chain breaker as it would to make a special-purpose rivet punch from scratch. The chain breaker is like filling a teacup with a fire hose or picking your teeth with a jackhammer.  ;o)

Yeah Vern I can't help it, I have the machines and material to make things lol a fringe benefit, my punches are made from 4.0 long M-2 high speed steel, .1875 Dia. and the bushing I.D. is .1882  ad I use a spinner fixture to grind the punch down to .0395 Dia 3/16 long  blended into a 3/16 radius.

Vern I had to spin or turn case hardened screw and then to add a case hardness back to the tip, the down size to that for me has been some times this made stress cracks in the threads.

OK Tony Srgo had 2 chest mics he wanted to convert back to a Mic stand for Him and Dom.. so this is what I came up with, Once again I cheated.

kc_liaw PM me as they say lol Yes I made all my parts and Yes I can help you with what you need. The punch base is from a Jeweler staking set, at least 30 years ago a friend of mind was going to throw it out and I saw it and the light bulb in my head went on, because of my trade this was a cake walk to make. check out the following site.   Wally
