Guns--have several.

What a coincidence - I was there from around November 30 to May 1970. I did both Basic and Radio school there, then went home (I was in the National Guard). I had totally forgotten that the first few years I was in the Guard we had regular Army advisors attached to us (an officer and an NCO). You're right about the weather - it would usually clear up around 11am and then cloud over again about 2pm. A few miles to the North (Santa Cruz) the weather is beautiful. People who come from all over the world to see Big Sur are usually surprised at how unpleasant the weather is. Fort Ord has been closed for years - the beach ranges were turned into a State Park (after they spent several years digging spent bullets out of the sand), most of the main post is now subdivisions that are part of the city of Marina, the area where Basic Training was held is now a State College, the golf courses are still golf courses, and part of the undeveloped eastern end is now the Laguna Seca raceway.

Probably over my head (since I practice so little) but it still sounds like a hoot. The closest thing to competition I ever did was back in the eighties when a cop came out to my junkyard in Colebrook, OH and I actually out shot the guy with my S&W model 19, then did it again with his (I think) model 10. I sold the 19 to help pay for air fare to Australia in 84. I really miss that cannon!
I may be looking for something in a 22 mag for CCW.

A.J.,
I had a model 19 that I ended up trading away and I've been kicking myself ever since. I also bought a cop surplus model 10, ground the serrations off the trigger face, bobbed the hammer so it's double action only, and through judicious stoning of the sear/trigger engagement got the DA pull down to around five pounds. I also traded it away. Dumb, dumb, dumb! Yeah, I loved the K frames. Js were too small for my hand, Ls and Ns too big.
As for 22 mag for CCW - I don't think it's the best choice. It's only available in revolvers and by design, that cylinder is a pretty hefty lump of steel pressed up against your body. Also, it doesn't develop sufficient energy to be truly effective as a defensive round. Unless you're a devoted wheel-gun man, an auto pistol would be more suitable for concealment. It's lighter (in most cases) and flatter making for a much more comfortable carry. These days, a compact .380 fills that bill quite well. It's so small and flat that you can carry it all day with no discomfort whatsoever. Bigger is always better as far as knock down power goes but comfort makes it more likely that you'll have the gun with you if you ever need it. God forbid!

I am a devoted wheel gun man. Father raised me that way - pocket watches and revolvers.

He's got a Vernier sight on it. Dad shoots a diatonic harmonica at 100 yards, it was far enough that you couldn't even tell there was a harmonica there. We had to put it in the center of a black circle and shoot at the circle. I was shooting a pretty good group in the video, too.

David,
That was an extreeeeemly cool video. You dad's .45/90 put me in mind of Quigley's Sharps rifle.
I've got a few cap and ball revolvers and a couple of front loaders but black powder is so dirty and gums things up so quickly that it's almost not worth the hassle.
For fun, I tried reloading black into an old model 94 Winchester lever action (circa. 1930) .32 Win. Sp. under a cast lead 150 grainer. It didn't take long for the fouling and barrel leading to degrade accuracy. I imagine your dad uses gas checks on his cast bullets as I'm sure the .45/90s are no longer commercially loaded.
Great fun! Is he still shooting? You? Um, I don't mean shooting you.
Bud

I saw a Hammerless Tarus Judge that kinda rang my bells. Something about the combination of .45 and 410 that excites me.
