HI
all..Name is Tom..63 lol...I want to learn Harmoica..i like Jazz and all kinds of Music..any advice weather to start on a Chromatic harp for a Beginner..Or should I go with diatonic..?..I'd like to have one Harmonica to start with and I thought Chromatic might be the way to go if there are decent teaching materials and it's not to difficult for a complete Klutz....

Hi Tom,
Welcome to the group. Only 63? Well, you'll fit right in here. Many of us are "Late bloomers."
Go Chromatic. It gives you all the notes and has much more versatility than a diatonic.
An Educator 10 is a good starter harmonica.
2½ octaves and is almost indestructible!

You will eventually buy other, more expensive harmonicas, but this will serve you well until you decide what you want to invest in.
There is a great software called "Harping"
Here's a link:
http://www.harpingmidi.com/download.html
It is shareware, so you can try it out for free. (only $19.95 USD if you decide to buy it)
Harping has a variety
of ways to view music. By notes, by tab, or you can view a Harmonica
graphic which will show you what holes to play.
It works with most diatonic and chromatic tunings.
You find the tune you want to play in MIDI format, open it in Harping,
then through the Mixer (Find it in "View" you can select what part of
the song you want to learn.
Another nice touch, the Harping Tab is done on a standard staff, so
while you are learning the songs by number you are also learning to
read music.
Because I am legally blind and have trouble differentiating between
lines and spaces on a staff. Harping has opened the door for me.
It is more fun learning songs than just scales.
Try it, you'll like it!

Hi Tom--
Have you ever played music on another instrument? Do you sing?
I don't own an Educator but Ziggy loves 'em--
Most chromatics are more expensive than that, and diatonics are cheaper (and easier to maintain).
But if you can afford it, they are more capable of playing a variety of music.
Besides that, the text above clearly states, "No diatonic discussion".
My advice: find a local teacher, or at the least, another human being who plays the harmonica--the Internet can only do so much :-[

Hi Tom. Youre just a kid. I didnt start playing until I was 68. :I would definitely go with the Chromatic unless youre into blues real heavy. If moneys not too much of an obstacle I would go with a CX12. It has many advantages for a beginner. If you dont want to invest too much in the beginning I would go with Ziggys choice. You will find tons of software and help out there. Half the fun is exploring all this. I have to warn you though, some of these guys, here, have a sense of humour.
