Irma

Well for Crying in a Bucket.  First, it was Harvey now it's Irma.
All you people in Florida, Hang on tight. Looks like you get the
next one coming your way.  I sure hope it goes through instead
of sitting on top of you like Harvey did to South Texas.

A number of my friends and coworkers are displaced by the western wildfires. I can hardly go outside because of the smoke and ash. September is usually the most beautiful month on the Northcoast, but not this year!

It seems so ironic that the east is being devastated by rain when the west desperately needs some. We'd all be happier if the rain could be divided evenly across the country.

Thanks Gnarley and everyone.
We are doing all we can to prepare. I've done what I can to protect my home, and the surrounding areas. Still minor work to do.   Then tomorrow I get to bring a flock of chickens and some pigeons inside.  I'm not sure the garage will ever be the same.
If I still have a garage...

Drinking water:  One of the worst problems would be having a city water supply contaminated or out of commission for weeks. Beaumont almost had that. 2008 Hurricane Ike knocked out water for a while in Houston.  One really cheap way to prepare for Irma is to buy a plastic garbage can with a cover and fill it with water. Buy and fill two garbage cans on Saturday.
I have no idea of why people prepare for hurricanes by buying half liter bottles of drinking water from a grocery store. I simply fill my collection of empty two quart juice bottles and empty two liter soft drink bottles with tap water. I saved the containers for just this purpose, used them for Hurricane Ike in 2008 and the recent Harvey in 2017.

A friend in Sarasota, twenty miles from North Port, Florida came through it okay. The roof on his house is only three months old, which must have helped.

Could be that a lot are still without electricity.
I know Irma went real close to Smokey if not
directly over him.

My daughter and her husband and kids live in Northport Fl.  They came through just fine.  No damage, just lost power.  I suspect SmoJoe is in the same boat.
I sure hope he's ok.  Being an old curmudgeon myself, I'd hate to lose SmoJoe on this list! (just joking Joe!)

I'm just outside of Atlanta and we got hit pretty bad in my area with high winds. My power has been out since Monday afternoon and isn't expected back on until Friday. It's been a rough week. Luckily no damage to my house, just debris around the yard, but a lot of people in the area had trees fall on their homes & other property. I've been sitting in the dark playing harmonica, finally got a shower at my boss's house today, and I'm killing time at my work right now because we just got power back on here today. Not much else to do except wait for power & eating out for every meal. It's both boring and stressful. A lesson in patience.

I'm in Palm Beach county, halfway between the ocean and the lake.
We lost some trees, but were not hit as badly  as expected.
We still don't have power.   Maybe Sunday.
