The Hohner Harmonetta Service Now Available
« on: July 05, 2017, 11:52:38 AM »
The Hohner Harmonetta (out of production) is quite an interesting and mechanically complex instrument.

Inside the shrouding is a complex web of buttons, rods, cams, and springs.  Underneath all of that, is a comb with 36 chambers and reed plates with 72 reeds.  Each chamber contains two reeds (blow and draw) which are the same pitch.  Of course, this makes wind savers necessary.

The Harmonetta is a fantastic sounding instrument.  When the wind savers get old, they harden and flutter.

I have just completed my first resurrection of a Hohner Harmonetta.  It is said to have once been owned by Don Les.  When I received it, many screws were missing and the shroud was held together with three large rubber bands.  Since the original screws are no longer available from Hohner, I reassembled the instrument using SAE replacement screws.  The instrument is back together and sounds fantastic once again!

So it with this that I am adding Harmonetta Repair to my menu of services.

Super! :)  I'd love to see them back in production but I know Hohner wouldn't do it.  :P

This is timely, as I was just contacted by Steve Watne, he wants me to accompany him on Harmonetta for a tune at SPAH. Valsentino--here is Tommy Reilly's version.

Also worth viewing, check out this talented guy from Holland named Frank, great video on the Harmonetta!

And just today, Michael Rubin signed up for SlideMeister!

Michael's a harmonica player (of all kinds), a teacher/instructor, performer, SPAH member who also just happens to play the harmonetta!

Looks like you'all need to start a 'harmonetta fan club' here. :)

'harmonetta fan club', attendance was sparse.
I am working out on the loaner from Steve, bet I'm going to have to unlearn a bunch of stuff in a few weeks. Nice to have a working one, it's not new but all the notes sound (pretty much).
I did a thing a few minutes ago, if you press down the right notes for a pentatonic scale, you can get that "black key glissando"--in all twelve keys!

That's terrific, George! Everyone has said for so long that they are almost impossible to fix, so it's great that you've taken on the task. Kudos!

Hey George,

How would you like to tackle this custom harmonetta? That's Charlie Horvath in the photo.

Hi George,

I recall seeing some other information about this unique harmonetta. I'll try to find it. Meanwhile here is another harmonetta
player. Has anyone heard of this duo? Al and Fritzie played in Philadelphia, Pa. on Mar 21, 1975.

Duo Orbis is from Bulgaria and have released cassettes, I believe. Certainly more known to Europeans.

Hi George,

The story I have is that Charlie Horvath created it and gave it to Bernie Bray who named it the "CharlieMonica". Don't know where it is now. With a collector?

Does anyone know what the second manual was for or intended to do? I can think of about three things that it could be used for that would add to the either the range or allow for easier use of certain cord structure. There are a few other possibilities but those two come first to mind. Would be enjoyable to see a diagram of the layout, but i doubt that will ever happen. it is fun enough doing a full diagram of the regular harmonetta.
